Through the creative hands of the artist, the life-like figure of the Buddhist Monk, Damo, emerges from the organic body of the cedar root. Damo, or the Bodhidharma, is traditionally credited as the transmitter of Zen Buddhism to China and regarded as its first Chinese patriarch. According to Chinese legend, Damo also introduced the physical training of Buddhist monks, which many believe led to the creation of Kung-fu.
