This device is an "open circuit" system, and it sends a signal to your security system when the circuit is closed by water. However, the most common home security systems are "closed circuit" system that are meant to alarm only when the circuit is broken. Closed-circuit systems, for example, the Honeywell Ademco line of home security systems, which is the most common home security system on the market,will not work with this WaterBug device. It is clearly untrue that this device "works with virtually any security or home automation system". When I called the customer service department to ask why their informational material does not notify potential customers that it will not work with the most popular brands of home security alarm systems, I was told that they would look into their promotional literature and make that correction if necessary. Beware of this issue before you purchase this item.
