PRODUCT NOTE: The tracklist here on Amazon has left out the first item, which is Alkan's Le festin d'Esope, as well as the group of three pieces 'Venezia e Napoli' by Liszt. Oddly, Amazon's provided list is short these several tracks.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Simply put, Igor Roma's arrangement of Alkan's Saltarelle must be heard to be believed. It might not be everybody's cup of tea, but to those with a penchant for massive & explosive virtuoso piano music of the romantic era: you'd better not miss this. The pianistic fireworks seem even more intense in this brief bravura encore piece than in the most fiery moments of the Solo Symphony or Concerto, or the Quasi-Faust movement of the Grande Sonate. The rest of the CD, especially Le festin d'Esope, succeeds admirably. In fact, Roma's Le festin d'Esope provides the most musically-interesting interpretations (that I've heard) of several variations, sometimes more distinctive even than Hamelin, although on the whole MAH owns this repertoire more than Roma. The Liszt & Prokofiev are marvelously played as well, but I do not have the required familiarity with these works and their other recordings to judge whether they offer anything new to a connoisseur.
